Runway Recreation: Safety Pin Dress

Not A How-To

To reiterate what the header says, this is definitely not a how-to. I’m not a seamstress and only know basic sewing. However, I didn’t even sew anything on this dress. It’s held together by safety pins and my thoughts and prayers. This is just more of a creative project that only I would be crazy enough to wear in public. What can I say, the joy of wearing something I made outweighs the embarrassment of it completely unraveling and falling apart in public. ~Living on the wild side~

I saw this Alexander McQueen dress (the far left dress on the mood board) buuuut it was $2k retail and $900 resell. I know, I know – what a steal. I totally would’ve bought it but I already treated myself to a yacht earlier this month. Ugh. And honestly, I thought it was something I could recreate using crochet fabric and a sweater dress – two things that I can easily find at a thrift store. I was also inspired by the safety pin shirts at Alexander Wang Spring/Summer ’19 and the safety pin dresses from the Versace Spring ’94 collection so this is a mesh of that style and the Alexander McQueen dress. I saved the McQueen dress to my photos and didn’t really think about it much more until recently. Someone gave me some clothes they weren’t wearing anymore. At first, I didn’t know what to do with it but this sweater dress and crochet shirt was in there and it reminded me of the Alexander McQueen dress and I knew this was my opportunity to try and recreate it.

I really like the laziness of creating something with safety pins and no sewing so I’ll probably keep playing around with that concept and try to create other styles. I do hope this will inspire those who do have sewing skills to find similar items in their closet or thrift store and recreate this dress. But I didn’t want to let the lack of a sewing machine or sewing skills stop me. It’s not the exact same dress since I only used materials I had on hand and there wasn’t enough to make the long, mesh bottom part. I’m considering separating it into a super cropped top and a midi skirt two-piece but for now, it’s my lovely McQueen-Wang-Versace Frankenstein dress.
